In the Allegory of the Cave, each element symbolizes a level of being and knowledge in Plato’s ontological and epistemological dualism. The relationship between the concepts of darkness and ignorance; light and knowledge; appearance and reality. The allegory of men trapped in a cave (lower level) and the man released outside (upper level).
